As more and more people advocate golfing, now I'd say golf brings a significant problem for us all. Be sure I am not a cynic. As we say, a coin has two sides, although golf is widely appreciated by many enthusiasts and players all over the world and the PGA is widely accepted to be a game that epitomizes the elite male, professional figure. I do not figure golf itself, here, but I assert that golf is fairly destructive in its use of the environment.
Environment
Destruction of Habitat for the creation of putting green. Destroys animals, earth, and surrounding air through use of fertilizers.
The putting green creates a large tracts of unusable land, that is heavily watered and fertilized in order to create perfect grass for walking/putting. This wastage of resources goes for no purpose but to please those who want to enjoy a large scale game. There is no reason to waste such large areas of land when resources are scarce in the world.
Wastage of gas for moving fat bodies around in golf-carts. This is rather self-explanatory. While many professional players choose not to use carts, I was told, this is hardly the case among recreational players - especially among the elderly. It requires fossil fuels to move senior citizens around to play a big game of pocket croquet.
Wastage of water and money to fund the creation and upkeep of a green. Wastage of water was noted above, but another problem is the wastage of money to fund, promote and upkeep the green and the surrounding areas. Sure the initial investment probably created some temporary jobs, but the long term problem is far worse. Such money could be spend in investment that would be far more beneficial to businesses and retailers, and the owners as well, but is demanded by the large nature of the grassy spot that must be kept green.
As I mentioned that everything is bilateral, golf also benefits for the business, human fitness etc. More about the benefits of golf : Golf's Benefits
