Turning point

It came on the 18th hole at the end of the third round. Jason Bohn played the hole in a strange fashion all week, as he explained: “I’ll never attempt to hit this green in two again the rest of my career. I’ve hit it in the water twice trying to hit this green in two. And both times I laid up I made birdie.

“So it was a massive momentum swing for me because I had just chucked the chip on the 53rd hole, made bogey, but got it up-and-down to salvage par on 18 (then I could) go and get something to eat and reset my mind going in the final 18, that was really big. That was great.”

Stats

For Bohn it was a week when the stats backed up the finishing position.

He ranked second for Driving Accuracy, sixth for Greens in Regulation, fourth for Scrambling, fourth for Putting Average and fifth for Putts per Round.

Little wonder he ranked first for All-round stats as he completed his two shot victory.

Insight

It is essential for players to find a good mental state to win an event and Bohn revealed afterwards that he did just that.

“I talked earlier in the week about how patient I was in my golf game,” he said. “My caddie spent all week saying just stay patient, just stay patient. Don’t try to force anything, and we really didn’t.

“Especially when Jeff Overton got off to a good start, started making some birdies and started to apply the pressure. I knew it was coming. We knew somebody was going to shoot a low round of golf today, and I just really (continued to) stay patient.

“So my overall thing that I’ll take away from this more than anything is how proud I am of myself for – should I say listening to my caddie or staying patient? I don’t know which one is right. But I did really stayed patient.”

Bohn: Start To Finish

“This is life changing,” said the 37-year-old Bohn, who admitted making his putt on 18 with tears in his eyes.

Bohn won the Zurich Classic on Sunday for his second PGA Tour title, birdieing one of the final two holes at TPC Louisiana for a 5-under 67 & a two-stroke victory over Jeff Overton.

Sunday’s victory, coming as it did after a variety of injuries & back surgery, was sweet, Bohn said. They told his caddie at the start of the final round they was planning on a quiet round.

Bohn, who completed a third-round 71 in the morning in the weather-plagued tournament, completed at 18-under 270. They also won the 2005 B.C. Open.

Bohn led since his 65 in the opening round, but admitted they felt the heat Sunday as several players moved in to range.

“I said I probably would not say much because I am capturing all of this,” Bohn said. “I require to take this two to the grave. I require to recall every small detail that I missed on my first two.”

Overton mounted a persistent challenge, once tying Bohn on his way to a 66.

“Jeff was playing beautifully. They played pretty golf today,” Bohn said. “I would say very perfect.”

Overton birdied the 18th — after missing a long eagle putt, but Bohn, who made birdie putts of 5½ feet on No. 15 & 22 feet on No. 16, had to only tap in on 18 for his fifth birdie of the round.

Overton said they played great Sunday, but Bohn was unbelievable.

“The final two holes, I perhaps got a small rapid with putts,” Overton said. “Maybe because I wanted it so much.”

Troy Merritt (67) was third at 14 under. They was 7 under during a seven-hole stretch that ended at No. 13, making one birdies & an eagle.

“It’s fun when you are making a lot of red numbers,” Merritt said. “Especially when they are back to back to back to back.”

Lee Janzen (69) was another stroke back, & Greg Chalmers (69) was 12 under.

Bohn completed his third round on Sunday morning at 13 under, one shots ahead of Alex Cejka. Overton & Janzen went in to the final round at 10 under.

Heavy rain & lightning Friday & again Saturday morning delayed the early rounds. Bohn, who led wire-to-wire, played 24 holes Saturday & 30 Sunday. They had six birdies & two bogey in his 30 holes Sunday.

Bohn earned $1,152,000 after making $395,321 in his previous two starts this year. In 1992, they won $1 million in a hole-in-one contest while a student at the University of Alabama. They has received $50,000 a year since then.
